Natural disasters are phenomena that can cause major damage, loss of life, and long-term impacts on the environment and society. In history, there have been various largest natural disasters that rocked the world, drawing global attention and triggering responses from various parties. One of the worst disasters was the Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2004. An earthquake measuring 9.1 magnitude rocked off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, producing a tsunami that affected tens of thousands of people in 14 countries. As many as 230,000 people died, and infrastructure in coastal areas was completely destroyed. This disaster highlights the importance of early warning systems and community preparedness. In Japan, the Tōhoku Earthquake and Tsunami occurred in March 2011, resulting in more than 18,000 deaths and crippling the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. This incident opened a global debate on nuclear safety and triggered a review of the energy policies of many countries, triggering a transition to renewable energy. Another terrible natural disaster was the Bangladesh Floods in 1970, which killed between 300,000 and 500,000 people. These floods are exacerbated by the submergence of low-lying areas by sea water, resulting in deep economic and social losses. As a result, the whole world is starting to think about the impacts of climate change and the importance of flood mitigation infrastructure. On the other hand, the eruption of Mount Tambora in 1815 in Indonesia was one of the strongest recorded. This eruption caused a worldwide economic collapse, triggered by the “year without a summer” in 1816. Agriculture failed in some areas, causing famine and mass death. This phenomenon is also changing the global climate and showing how vulnerable the world’s agricultural system is to natural disasters. Another natural disaster that is no less important is the frequent Amazon forest fires, showing the direct impact of deforestation. The fires in 2019 received international attention as a result of climate change and global warming. Losses in biodiversity not only damage ecosystems but also affect the Earth’s climate as a whole. The 2010 Haiti earthquake was another world-shaking tragedy. With a magnitude of 7.0, this earthquake caused more than 230,000 deaths and destroyed many important buildings. The international response saw an outpouring of humanitarian aid, but challenges in recovery remained long after the disaster. Lastly, Hurricane Katrina which occurred in the United States in 2005 created severe damage in New Orleans. With strong winds and flooding, many areas were submerged, and hundreds of thousands of people were forced to flee. This disaster created new awareness about the city’s resilience to natural disasters in an era of increasingly real climate change. Facing natural disasters requires strong preparation and education to reduce the impact. Research and development of disaster mitigation technology must be a focus, including early warning systems and disaster-resilient infrastructure.
