SINOPSIS

Fame and success seem to accompany Porter Wren. As the editor of a tabloid newspaper in New York, his specialty is to unearth the best and worst of the immense city, always on the hunt for that morbid detail or that dash of sweet emotion that could be overlooked by television reporters. Porter believes that he has already seen everything and that nothing can affect him. He even believes he is safe from himself and from his own instincts. Like many other "smart guys" in the guild, it would have been better to know each other. In the course of an elegant party, Porter is approached by the beautiful and enigmatic Caroline Crowley. It is clear that she does not tell him the whole truth and also that it is dangerous. Thus, from this first encounter until the final meeting in a cafeteria, we will witness the story of a man irresistibly drawn to the abyss. The American critic has rightly pointed out that Manhattan Nocturne combines the best of Raymond Chandler and Tom Wolfe. Although the deliberate use of an aesthetic noire, characteristic of the thirties, coupled with the pessimistic and nostalgic attitude of the hero to life, trademark record of the endearing Philip Marlowe, leads us to remember the master of the black novel, does not fit Doubt that the relentless cynicism before a social reality that speaks for itself puts us unfailingly in the territory of Wolfe. With Porter Wren, Colin Harrison has created a magnificent, unrepeatable character who, as a cartographer of a society that seems to have lost control of itself, seduces us by the ruthless character of his personal search, to the point that the resolution of the Case passes to a definitive background before the deep ethical and moral dilemma of the protagonist, unmistakable seal of our time.
