SINOPSIS

This book by Uwe Michael Lang, member of The Oratory (in London), studies the orientation of the liturgical prayer from a historical, theological and pastoral perspective. In a moment that seems very propitious, the book sums up a debate that, despite appearances against it, has not yet ended, even after the Second Vatican Council. More recently, the climate has softened considerably, so it is now possible to address the issues raised by Jungmann, Bouyer and Gamber without incurring suspicion of anticonciliar feelings. In this situation, Lang"s book, charmingly objective and totally alien to any kind of polemic, is an invaluable guide. The theological answers proposed by the author spring from these historical data; And I, personally, hope that this book, the fruit of the work of a young researcher, will be a great help to the debate - necessary in any new generation - to understand in a correct and dignified way the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy. My best wish is for the book to reach the widest circle of readers. Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (current Pope Benedict XVI).
