The Basics of Poker

Poker

In the game of poker, the odds of winning are determined by how much money is in the pot. This is not the same as the percentage of hands that you’ll win or lose. The odds that you’ll win or lose are dependent on the number of cards in the deck. If you’re dealing with two aces, the ace-joker combination is considered a retained opener. The same applies to the ace-king combination.

The game of poker is played with chips, almost always in sets of two or three. The lowest-value chip is the white one, while the highest-value chip is the red one. Each player “buys in” by buying a certain number of chips. Each person buys in for the same amount of chips. To win the game, the player with the highest number of chips is deemed the active player. If he/she has the highest number of chips in the pot, he/she is said to be the “active” player.

Unlike many card games, poker is played with chips. The game is played with a standard 52-card deck. The cards are ranked A-K-Q-J-A, and are worth one of those three colors. Each card in the hand is worth a different amount, and players may have a variety of coloured chips in their hand. Usually, the highest-valued hand wins the pot. However, in some variations of the game, the highest-valued hand will win the pot.
