Poker is a card game in which each player is dealt one card faceup and one facedown. The deal is interrupted at various points in the game for a betting interval. Each round of dealing distributes one card faceup to each active player. After the third round of dealing, the hole cards are revealed and the winning player takes home the pot. The house rules allow players to double their bets a few times. After three or four raises, however, the stake is too large and a player will be forced out of the game due to lack of funds. Therefore, historical house rules limit the number of raises to three or four. While this rule seems arbitrary, it is a popular variation of the game. In most cases, the best combination of cards doesn’t win.
