In a standard poker game, the ante, or first bet, is a nickel placed into the pot by a player. Each player is dealt five cards, a set of which is known as a “flop”. A pair of kings isn’t a bad hand, and the ante will be worth one cent per player. Betting then begins, and players must decide if they want to stay in the game or fold their cards.

The highest possible hand in poker is called a full house. A full house consists of three of a kind and two cards of another rank. For example, a full house would contain three 8s and two fours. A flush is 5 cards of one suit ranked from Ace to King. A straight hand would have five consecutive cards of any rank. And finally, a straight hand, or “flush”, would be five cards in sequence, with two of one suit and three of the other.

An equity calculator allows you to calculate the odds of winning a hand, or calling out of it, in the game. For example, if a $100 pot has 10 players and a call cost of $10, the odds of winning the hand are 11-to-1. If your hand has better odds than that, call. Otherwise, you’ll have to fold, so you can’t afford to lose. If you’re losing a hand, consider betting if the odds are better.
